Social Media trial and error

15 Sep

Yesterday, I did a blog posting on our seminar up at U VIC’s Workplace Skills Conference. My post attracted a lot of attention, but not for the reasons I hoped. So I’ve taken the unprecedented move of pulling it. Some of the faculty didn’t like it, but that’s not why I killed it – not everyone has to like what we post here. It’s because a few of the many good students who contacted me wondered if it maligned the reputation of their program, which was never my intention.

The BCom program is so good that two of our outstanding employees are currently from it, my co-presenter Diana Walter, and Amanda Waye. And there have been many others in Copeland’s history.

Back to the blog, it doesn’t serve any purpose to talk about the students who aren’t the best representatives of their school, when so many good examples abound.

How deliciously ironic that our seminar detailed the risks and rewards of Social Media for businesses.

Thanks for the comments from all the students who wrote, and you know who you are.

    Deliciously ironic, indeed.

That’s the problem of social media when businesses get involved. Just one off-hand comment sucks the life out of the whole thing. It creates a false type of socializing where everyone only says positive things while pointing to the product.

Yesterday’s post was a walk down memory lane for anyone who’e ever been in a lecture hall. It had humour and a sense of self-depreciation, the latter being taboo amongst businesses.

Vomit, I hear you. I assure you we will continue to aim for, among other noble things, humour and self-depreciation in our posts. Just not at the expense of anyone who doesn’t deserve it – like the keeners in the U VIC BCom program. Thanks a lot for your comment.

I would’ve kept the post up. Personally, I knew the intention was not a serious representation of the program, but rather just having some fun with the situation!

But obviously many others took it a different way, and a number of Faculty and other students came to me asking about it.

Either way, it spread like wildfire and I’d say it was a successful experiment! =)

I was kinda sad to see it go to be honest. I love blogs (maybe an understatement). I love that they’re (relatively speaking) unfiltered media. I always get a kick reading interesting entries.

If I was in that position, I’d probably write it even more tongue-in-cheek, and just forgo the university name all together since you don’t really have to take it down because it doesn’t reference anything aside from those who knew that they were involved.

It was a awesome post, and definitely showed the power of social media. People do watch and pay attention. The fact that it generated buzz means that it provided some thought, which is always good 😀 Who knows? Maybe next year they’ll come up with something to prepare the students better because of that particular post.

Thanks for your comments Connor and Felix. The original post reached the faculty and has already produced positive effect: they have seen the AWESOME POWER AND SPEED OF SOCIAL MEDIA. As for the seminar nappers, they were too easy a target. Next time I’ll go after the silent gas passers!

PS @ Chris Dallin, you are Andrew’s cousin? I remember doing the business plan a few months ago back and checked out Kontent Creative. Small world to meet online! >=)

    Hey, Felix!
Yes, Andy is my cousin. Small world indeed. And Doug Brown is an old friend of mine from Ottawa. I like your comments on the Blog Doug posted. There was quite a bit of talk about it in our office yesterday. We thought it would be an excellent “case study.”
    Best,
    Chris
