Tessa Virtue: a name made for endorsements

25 Feb

Tiger Woods name has become the butt of armchair comedians everywhere. Still, no doubt the corporate world has failed to heed my warning about the dangers of celebrity endorsers and is swarming all over Whistler and Vancouver looking for the next big shiller.

Who knew it would be humble Tessa Virtue from London, Ontario.

She’s got it all: a Gold Medal (with partner Scott Moir in the Dance competition of Figure Skating), an overcoming-adversity-to-get-here story, and a great reputation amongst the public and her fellow competitors.

More importantly for advertisers, she’s got the name.

Tessa Virtue is like an intrepid, never-say-die character in a Martin Amis novel. If she didn’t exist, marketers would have to invent her.

She is the embodiment of, well, virtue, which advertisers are surely paying heed to like never before.

And thankfully her parents didn’t name her Edith.

When I saw Jon Montgomery (Gold medalist) doing his auctioneer bit during a post-medal TV interview, I wondered how long it would take before someone made him their spokesperson. He certainly has the fast talking down already.

Let’s see if we can get him up to the studio to do the “someconditionsapplypleaseseewebsiteforfullcontestdetails. contestnotopentoemployeesortheiradagenciesnorradioproducers” bit that goes at the end of radio spots. He could save us a whack of time!
