Meet the Superhumans

4 Sep

Most of the world has gone back to normal sleeping routines and put away armchair fantasies of Olympic glory until the next Summer Games in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the Olympic ideal – the triumph of the human spirit – is only now truly being showcased in London.

Paralympic athletes are rarely featured on cereal boxes or have their names chanted in small villages. It took participation in the Summer Olympics to finally make a global star out of one of them, the blade runner Oscar Pistorious.

As this powerful TV ad from the UK makes plain, those other Olympians, the ones who’ve collected their medals and gone home, have it easy by comparison. Meet the Superhumans.

World, you ain’t seen nothing until these guys hit the stage.

Thank you Doug. I’ve known a few people who were para-athletes and they never gave any quarter or took prisoners in their attitudes toward life. No pity, please, just get outta the way.
The disabled are those of us who see the wheelchair instead of the person. Well, okay, I do like to check out all the mod-cons on their chairs but you know what I mean…
    That made my day.

Ever since I saw my first wheelchair basketball game, I realized that what we have here are athletes first – with an athlete’s mindset. What they do is incredible to me. I was thrilled to see that captured so memorably in this TV spot. Glad you liked it too Moe!
