Use your brains. Give blood.

The Walking Dead give blood

“In the event of a natural disaster – or even a zombie apocalypse – it’s the existing blood supply that will help save lives.”

So goes the new pitch for the American Red Cross, which has hitched its wagon to the AMC zombie juggernaut, The Walking Dead.

The blood donor bank is asking fans of the show to visit this site and set up an appointment to donate their blood, with a trip to the set being dangled as a prize. No, the infection hasn’t spread to the Canadian Red Cross.

As an added bit of eye-candy for the die-hards, celebrities who have given blood have their photos zombified on the contest page.

Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, zombies are finally proving useful.

Yeah, fangs for the reminder Baz! But I do think you’re mixing up your monster metaphors a tad…. 😉

Hey Doug, don’t expect any word from the Canadian Red Cross. They have not been involved in the collection of blood for nearly 15 years. It’s Canadian Blood Serivces that might take up the cause.

Argh! In March 2009 we pitched Canadian Blood Services on an annual Halloween Vampire promotion — showed them little kids in Dracula costumes knocking on doors saying,”Blood. It’s in you to give” and handing out flyers that drive traffic to their themed website for donations of blood or money. One of my favourite ideas that didn’t fly…

Such a fun idea. Maybe it was just too polite for Canadian Blood Services. They might have responded better to kids actually leaping at the folks handing out the candy, swarming all over them and biting them. Worked for the zombies…

Or perhaps the American Red Cross just has more guts? Hm.
